The Ladies’ Derby Handicap headlines Epsom Downs’s Thursday card this week with six contests taking place in Surrey.
Ahead of the action, we’ve identified our three value picks on the card who can potentially outrun their odds.
Here’s our picks…
ATHEEB: 6:08pm Epsom Trainers Open Day 12 September Handicap
A trappy opener but George Boughey interestingly only has two runners on the card and that could take some looking into.
The former Sir Michael Stoute trained gelding is only 2lbs higher than his last winning mark and has had wind surgery since his Newcastle disappointment in March.
Claimer Aled Beech eases the weight carriage on his back and he has won over the seven-furlong trip before, with a return to the turf not an immediate negative on form.
POWER OVER ME: 6:38pm Watchable Handicap
Robyn Brisland’s contender has been in fine form in 2021, winning five of his seven starts.
He was probably shedding any cobwebs when a tad disappointing at Chelmsford last time out when his consistent string of efforts in the earlier part of the campaign came to a two-and-a-half-month break.
But he ran well on turf over in Ireland and reverts back to this sphere for the first time in Britain and remains low mileage given that he is a four-year-old.
MISS ELSA: 8:08pm Langley Vale Handicap
After being off the track for ten months, Lee Carter’s mare made a pleasing seasonal debut at Lingfield in January back up in trip and has only been given a 1lb rise for her pipe-opener troubles.
This looks her optimum trip and she’s in the good hands of Liam Jones as she runs at Epsom for the first time.
Although she hasn’t won from a mark this high, she presents plenty of value and perhaps the stiff test will suit her as she runs on grass once again since a Chepstow appearance in 2019.
