The flat season is slowly drawing to a close, with several top-class contenders heading to Scotland for the Ayr Gold Cup Festival.

The three-day meeting gets underway on Thursday afternoon and concludes on Saturday, with the Ayr Gold Cup scheduled on the final day.

Our team have taken a look at the 6f Handicap’s entries and have picked out a handful of runners that could prove to be of some value in the contest.

Here are three ante-post selections to consider for the Ayr Gold Cup this weekend.

GULLIVER (16/1 – Various)

A regular attendee in big field handicap, Gulliver could well be in the mix in this contest if his connections decide to head to Scotland on Saturday.

The seven-year-old finished fourth in the Bold Lad Sprint at the Curragh on Sunday and he has been fairly consistent as of late for David O’Meara.

It’s not clear if the gelding will head to Ayr, but he would be right up there if the decision is made to go for it.

MR WAGYU (20/1 – Various)

One of the runners that were highlighted in our tracker tally on Monday, Mr Wagyu could feature as early as Saturday for John Quinn.

The gelding ran well over five and a half furlongs at Doncaster, finishing two and a quarter lengths behind the winner.

The six-year-old should appreciate the return to six furlongs here and he looks at a workable mark in this company.

FIVETHOUSANDTOONE (33/1 – Coral + Ladbrokes)

Making his handicap debut for Andrew Balding, Fivethousandtoone could be a surprise contender in the Ayr Gold Cup on the weekend.

The three-year-old has featured in Group company for most of his career and looks at a very decent starting mark in this company.

He does hold an entry at Newmarket in October, but the gelding could well be one to note if connections opt to head up to Scotland.
