To celebrate Oisin Murphy turning 26th, today’s rewind is dedicated to the Champion Jockey’s sole Classic success to date – with Andrew Balding’s Kameko in last season’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Going off as a 10/1 shot, the Kitten’s Joy colt faced an almost impossible task of overcoming Charlie Appleby’s seriously impressive Pinatubo who was yet to taste defeat.
Starting the race in midfield, the three-year-old travelled into the race beautifully with Murphy shaking his mount up with two furlongs remaining.
He began to make headway in the final furlong and he pushed his head in front in the final stages.
The colt battled on right up to the line, just holding out to claim success by a short head in the Group 1 contest.
Kameko would only win one more contest that season, in the form of the Group 2 Shadwell Joel Stakes, before being retired to stud.
