Following the events of the Derby Festival earlier this month, flat racing’s prestigious events continue with Royal Ascot kickstarting on Tuesday afternoon.

Palace Pier is a hot favourite in Royal Ascot’s opener, the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes

Our team have selected four of our best bets of the day for Berkshire’s day-one showpiece…

DOM’S PICKS

BATTASH: 3:40pm King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) – Last year’s winner holds obvious claims despite being 12 months older and now seven. He didn’t need the run when taking this in 2020 so there is no concern him being fresh. Only finding Blue Point too good previously, he has a solid track record and completed an unbeaten campaign at York in the Nunthorpe when last seen, and if anything, has got better with age.

HIGHLAND AVENUE: 4:20pm St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) – Charlie Appleby’s colt has won three of his five starts and was only downed by Tuesday rival Mostahdaf by half a length at Sandown. That in soft ground, though, and he was giving his rival 3lbs so is sure to be better suited by the quicker ground now on level weights.

REECE’S PICKS

CAPE GENTLEMAN: 5:00pm Ascot Stakes (Handicap) – The former Irish Cesarewitch winner returns to this code under Rachael Blackmore and holds some very strong previous flat form now rated 15lbs higher from that Curragh success. He has enjoyed two victories over hurdles in the meantime, including a Grade 2, so may not be handicapped out of things on his reappearance to the sphere.

SOLID STONE: 5:35pm Wolferton Stakes (Listed) – The son of Sharmadal last won a Listed contest at Windsor and that form has been franked superbly, with three of those rivals going onto win since. He got a peach of a ride that day and Ryan Moore returns to the plate aboard the former Balmoral Handicap runner-up.
