The Stewards’ Cup is the feature race on the final day of Glorious Goodwood, with 28 runners vying for success in the six-furlong sprint in West Sussex.

FRESH (7/1) holds favouritism for the contest, after two bold efforts in big-field handicaps this season for James Fanshawe.

The four-year-old landed success in an 18-runner field handicap at Ascot in May, before finishing a neck behind Rohaan in the Wokingham Stakes.

He is a justified favourite here and carries some interesting form into the contest.

HURRICANE IVOR (10/1) is stepped back up in trip for William Haggas, after running over the minimum distance in his three starts this season.

The gelding was one of the two winners in the Sandown dead heat fiasco at the beginning of the month and he followed that up with a strong effort at Ascot, finishing second of 18 runners.

He has claimed success over six furlongs in France, but he is yet to produce that form on British soil.

Charlie Fellowes has two representatives in the contest, in the form of Tokyo Trophy Handicap winner EJTILAAB (12/1) and Royal Ascot winner CHIEFOFCHIEFS (14/1).

CHIL CHIL (16/1) returns to handicaps after featuring in the Chipchase Stakes and the July Cup for Andrew Balding, while Eve Johnson Houghton’s PUNCHBOWL FLYER (16/1) has been in flying form after winning three of his last four starts.

COMMANCHE FALLS (12/1) claimed the Scottish Stewards’ Cup at Hamilton a fortnight ago for Michael Dos and David Barron’s ZARYZNI (16/1) claimed success on his return to six furlongs last time out at Redcar.

Mark Johnston

Mark Johnston has a pair of runners entered into the contest with last season Scottish Stewards’ Cup winner MERAAS (16/1) and previous course winner DESERT SAFARI (28/1) featuring for the North Yorkshire trainer.

SUMMERGHAND (16/1) is only 1lb higher in the ratings when claiming success in this contest last season for David O’Meara, with stablemate GULLIVER (25/1) joining the Group 1 runner.

Kevin Ryan

Kevin Ryan holds four entries in the handicap with BIELSA (16/1), HEY JONESY (25/1), MAJOR JUMBO (25/1) and JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE (40/1) all aiming for Goodwood success.

ATALANTA’S BOY (18/1) landed C&D victory for David Menuisier back in April and  Charles Hills’ MOTAGALLY (20/1) make his first appearance in handicap company since October.

GREAT AMBASSADOR (22/1) will need to defy a career-high mark to claim success for Ed Walker, while Michael Appleby’s DANZENO (25/1) will appreciate the extra furlong after finishing six lengths off the winner over the minimum distance on his last outing at Ascot

LAMPANG (25/1) will relish the return to better ground for Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey’s MR LUPTON (25/1) will need to bounce back from his disappointing run in the Wokingham Stakes last month.

Amanda Perrett is represented by two runners in the contest, with COUNT OTTO (40/1) and TINTO (40/1) making the short trip to Goodwood for the Pulborough-based trainer.

Mick Channon’s BARBILL (50/1), Simon Hodgson’s TOTAL COMMITMENT (50/1) Scott Dixon’s ZARGUN (50/1) and Paul Midgley’s OSTILIO (66/1) complete the field.

SELECTIONS:

  • Punchbowl Flyer E/W @ 16/1
  • Meraas E/W @ 16/1
  • Mr Lupton E/W @ 25/1
