THE DERBY | Best selections for Saturday’s Classic at Epsom

Resident writer Reece Charlton has named his best bets for the Derby on Saturday

Spring Meeting - Epsom Downs Racecourse - Epsom - Derby - Wirko - Uncle Bryn - Victory Chime - The Derby

The fourth classic of the season is scheduled on Saturday, with the Derby featuring on Epsom over the weekend.

17 runners have been declared in the 1m4f classic, with Desert Crown leading the market currently.

While Sir Michael Stoute’s recruit doesn’t scream value, plenty of other entrants could put up a big performance at a decent price in the Derby.

Here are the two selections I’ll be backing for the Derby.

Changingoftheguard @ 8/1

Royal Patronage E/W @ 33/1

BEST BET: Changingoftheguard (8/1 – Various)

While plenty of pundits will be siding with stablemate Stone Age, there could well be more value in Changingoftheguard if the heavens open at Epsom this weekend.

A convincing winner of the Chester Vase, the Galileo colt defeated a smart rival and he is now given his chance in Group 1 company.

Aidan O’Brien’s Changingoftheguard could be one to note for the Derby

The three-year-old has been thriving over the middle distances this year and he could well have more in the locker to be competitive at this level here.

If the forecasted rain softens up the ground for the Derby, Changingoftheguard could be worth siding with here.

EACH-WAY: Royal Patronage (33/1 – Various)

A consistent sort from Charlie & Mark Johnston’s yard, Royal Patronage could run another cracker for his connections here.

A dual Group winner as a two-year-old, the Wootton Bassett colt has put up a respectable start to the campaign as he finished a far-from-disgraced eight in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

The three-year-old was backed into joint favouritism when running into second in the Dante stakes, finishing behind Desert Crown.

It’s unlikely the colt will reverse the form here but he could well run into a place at a decent price.
