Anapurna rallied superbly under Frankie Dettori to see off Pink Dogwood and land the Oaks for John Gosden back in 2019 at the Derby Festival.

The Frankel three-year-old, who had easily landed the Oaks Trial at Lingfield earlier that month, was game in the second Classic of the season for Fillies and Mares in Surrey.

Stable-mate Mehdaayih was sent off an 11/4 favourite, but it was to be Aidan O’Brien’s Pink Dogwood who would enter battle with the eventual winner in the home straight.

O’Brien’s luck would change the day after in the form of Anthony Van Dyck, but Ballydoyle would have to settle for second on this occasion as the Newmarket base secured the spoils.

Fleeting picked up minor money at 25-1, ahead of Manuel De Vega in fourth.

It was a third win in the Oaks for trainer Gosden, and fifth for jockey Dettori

The winner would suffer heavy defeats at Longchamp and Ascot in the aftermath but did win at the French track in between as she picked up a second career Group 1 victory.

FULL RESULT
  1. Anapurna (8/1)
  2. Pink Dogwood (3/1)
  3. Fleeting (25/1)

INTERESTING OAKS FACT: The first running of the Oaks was held back in 1779, and was won by Bridget, owned by the Earl of Derby at the time, Edward Stanley – who has a stand named in his honour at the course.
